Everything you need to know about the Covid-19 vaccine

(Last Updated On: March 12, 2021)

The first phase of COVID-19 vaccine began on 16 January. It started with vaccinating healthcare care workers and frontline workers, which was estimated to be around 3 crores.

In March, the third phase of the vaccine for coronavirus commenced with an aim to cover 27 crore people of the age 50 and above, as stated by Harsh Vardan in the Lok Sabha. No specific date has been released, but it is estimated that the third phase of the coronavirus vaccine distribution will start in the third or fourth week of march. In the third phase, the focus will be on the safety of  aged people and those with comorbidities.

Two coronavirus vaccines, Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute, and indigenously developed Covaxin of Bharat Biotech, have been approved for emergency use authorization. There are seven other coronavirus vaccines which include the moderna vaccines, and are under development. Out of these seven vaccines, three are going for trials in the third phase of vaccine distribution. Two vaccines are in phase 1 and 2 clinical trial stages and the remaining two are in advanced preclinical stage.

22 countries including Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, Egypt, Kuwait, Maldives, Mauritius, Morocco, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, South Africa and the UAE have requested India for COVID-19 vaccine. Coronavirus vaccines have already been given to 15 countries through grant assistance and contracted doses. 56 lakh doses have been sent through grants and five lakh doses through contract.

Safety of the vaccine is the question here? What are the side effects? Will it protect us from the coronavirus? How worrying are the side effects of the vaccine? Several vaccines against the dreaded COVID-19 are now gradually being made available across the globe. However, you may be questioning the safety of the Covaxin, Covishield and Moderna vaccine.

Regular side effects: Certain reactions after any vaccination are normal such as redness, pain and swelling at and around the injection site and are no reflection on the vaccine effectiveness. Symptoms such as fever, tiredness, aching limbs, and headache are also often observed in the first few days of the vaccine. These are regular and common side effects. These regular side effects have been reported after people were vaccinated with Covaxin, Covishield and Moderna.

Rare Serious Side Effects: Rare side effects such as allergic shocks have also been reported in some of the cases. Patients even went into anaphylactic shock, symptoms of which include skin redness and shortened breathes. The vaccine developed by homegrown brand Bharat Biotech, has been safely administered to millions of healthcare workers in India. While most subjects have only shown normal vaccine side effects, in extremely rare cases, severe allergic reactions such as breathlessness, swelling of the face, body rash etc. may also occur. Despite these vaccine side effects, you should get vaccinated.

The COVID-19 vaccine has the potential to save your life and maintain others safety. So, when your time comes to get the vaccine, do register yourself and encourage everyone around you too. Being in the third phase of the vaccine run the government is hoping to see positive results and no side effects of the coronavirus vaccine on people.
