(Last Updated On: March 25, 2021)

Maintaining a nutritious diet and regular exercise helps the immune system to function optimally. If you have a strong immune system, you can safeguard yourself from any illness or disease, even from the infamous Covid-19 virus. Improving our immunity has become more important than ever because a poor immune system won’t be able to fight the virus even if we take the vaccine. Feeding your body certain foods may help you boost your immunity. There are certain vitamins and foods which you should include in your daily diet to maintain a strong immune system. With daily surge in cases we have to give extra attention to the food we consume.

Following is a list of food items that you must start to inculcate in your daily meals:

  • Yoghurt: Due to excessive sanitisation, our hands also lose some of the good bacteria which play an important role in building immunity. Yoghurt is a natural probiotic and accelerates the formation of good bacteria in our body. There’s nothing better than a fresh yoghurt. Not only does it taste well, but also provides necessary probiotics to the body.

  • Garlic: Garlic is a natural antiviral food item. It is appreciated all around the world for its medicinal properties. Garlic’s immune-boosting properties seem to come from a heavy concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin. Garlic has proven effective against the seasonal flu as well.

  • Vitamin C fruits: Among all kinds of Vitamins, Vitamin C plays an important role in strengthening one’s immunity. For the same, one should add more citrus fruits and vegetables like Amla, Lemon, Orange and others in their regular diet. According to various health workers, even the patients who have contracted the virus are being Vitamin C through the IV which directly delivers fluids in the vein. So, the inclusion of Vitamin C rich fruits and veggies is essential to build a strong protective cover from the virus.

  • Turmeric: The golden spice turmeric is known for its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, the compound present in turmeric is a very potent agent and aids the healing of wounds and infections. Curcumin works as an immune booster and an antiviral. The most common and effective way to consume turmeric is by mixing it in a glass of warm milk, also known as ‘Haldi Wala Doodh’.

  • Green tea: Both green and black teas are enriched with flavonoids, a type of antioxidant. Where green tea really excels is in its levels of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), another super powerful antioxidant. In studies, EGCG has been displayed some enhancement in immune function. Green tea is also a great source of the amino acid L-theanine. L-theanine may aid in the production of germ-fighting compounds in your T cells. It is advisable to start your day with green tea, however, you can fit this beverage at any time throughout the day.
