How to prioritize your mental health?

(Last Updated On: March 17, 2021)

If you fall and break a bone, you immediately rush to the hospital. This injury isn’t dismissed, people don’t ask you to walk it off or ignore it. If our physical health gets such importance, why do we not treat our mental health the same way? Your mental health is as important as your physical health. A healthy mind and a healthy body will lead you to a happy life. Mental health is something which was hidden behind the curtains for a really long time, but during the pandemic people came out and spoke openly about it. It is high time we understand that we need to prioritize our mental health and address the challenges people face, rather than pretending that everything is normal. Every person has different ways to deal with anxiety, depression and panic attacks, some try to hide it while some choose to do cardio and yoga. How you deal with you feelings is your choice.

There is no fixed way to prioritize your mental health, but here are a few things you can do to make yourself feel better. 5 ways to prioritize your mental health and wellbeing.

  1. Get active- Being lazy not only affects your physical health but also your mental health. Engaging in physical activity keeps your body healthy and also releases your brain’s happy hormones like endorphins. This chemical triggers a positive feeling throughout your body and keeps the negativity out. Working out for at least 30-45 mins a day can be good for your body as well as your mental health.
  2. Self-care- Taking care of yourself is really important. Self-care does not only mean taking care of your body, skin and hair but also taking of your mind and mental health. Find something small that makes you feel good about yourself and makes you happy, and add it to your daily routine, this way you can look after your mental wellness. It doesn’t have to be something big; it can be something as small as a long bath after a stressful day or reading a book before sleeping, or doing some cardio or even yoga.Yoga is proven to calm people and help them deal with their feelings in a healthy way. Take care of yourself as your wellness matters the most. Self-love is self-care.
  3. Address your feelings- People have a hard time opening up and addressing their feelings, they tend to think that people will judge them for being vulnerable or won’t understand them. That is why people deal with their depression, anxiety and panic attacks alone and never let anyone around them know. But that is not true, there are people out there who are ready to listen and understand as long as you are ready to address your feelings. It is healthy to be open with your emotions rather than keeping them bottled up. Opening up and talking will help you deal with your anxiety, depression and panic attacks in a better and a more healthy way.
  4. Create your safe space- Many people do not like to burden others with their feelings, but it is important that you open up to someone. Find people you trust and feel safe and free to talk about your feelings. Create a safe space for you to talk about your feelings. Find people that truly care about your wellness.
  5.  Reach out to a professional- Sometimes the best thing you can do is to reach out to a professional to understand your feelings better. A professional can help you deal with things and help you take care of your mental health.

We need to start prioritizing our mental health and wellness as much as we take care of our body. Mental health matters and we should do whatever we can to make it a priority. It takes time but small changes in our daily routine like doing yoga, cardio and self care to take care of ourselves can have a huge impact.
