In today’s day and age, taking care of your mental health has become extremely important. People put themselves through extreme levels of stress and anxiety which really affects their mental well being. With the kind of competition that we face today, it has become very important to stay relevant and bring something different to the table. In this process, a lot of stress and anxiety is born in people’s minds. A rapid rise in crime has also contributed to this phenomenon.

Social media, by far, has played a huge role in creating mental health concerns amongst people.

Today people are exposed to various types of mental health challenges such as anxiety, delusion, bipolarity, depression, panic attacks etc. It’s very important to recognise these challenges to be educated about their treatments. Following is a list of three most common mental health challenges and their respective treatments.

  • Anxiety: Anxiety is your body’s direct response to stress. It is basically a fear about welcoming new things, routines into your life. Normal anxiety is different from an actual anxiety disorder. In the case of an anxiety disorder, people live with the aforementioned fear. If not treated, It inhibits a person’s ability to socialize and get help which further de-rails their mental health.

Treatment: Anxiety treatments are different for everybody. For some a few lifestyle changes can do the trick whereas in some cases, severe medication is suggested by the doctor. Psychotherapy is the most common way to cope with anxiety – a qualified therapist can guide you to overcome this mental illness in a very comfortable manner. Coping with anxiety is difficult but it is something that can be taken care of with regular counselling and medication.

  • Depression: Depression mainly deals with a person’s mood. It can be described as feelings of sadness, anger, grief which may act as an obstacle in a person’s routine life. Depression can also accelerate some chronic illnesses such as cancer, asthma and arthritis. Recognising this feeling could be tougher than its actual treatment so if you are feeling low on a regular basis, you could be dealing with depression.

Treatment:  Depression can be treated in a number of different ways. Medicines (antidepressants) and psychotherapy is the most common treatment for depression. Other treatments such as light therapy, acupuncture and yoga have also proven to be beneficial in this regard. These exercises help the person to feel more positive and have a constructive effect on his overall mental well-being.

  • Psychosis: Psychosis is characterized by an impaired relationship with reality. People who suffer from psychosis experience constant delusions or hallucinations. Hallucination is a sensory experience in which a person participates in some imaginary incidents which aren’t a part of the real world. There is a high possibility of some serious physical harm through this illness since the person’s ability to distinguish reality is blinded by his imaginations. Some other disorders that come under this umbrella are Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia and Psychotic depression.

Treatment: Treating psychosis usually involves a combination of medication and counselling. A process called rapid tranquilization is used to calm people who get agitated quickly and could pose a threat to their own life or the life of their loved ones. It also involves grounding the person at a hospital or at home. Cognitive behavioural therapy is also used to change the thinking process, behaviour of the patient. It often helps in cases which can’t be resolved through medication.

In order to avoid such situations, you need to start taking care of yourself. Take a break, make time for leisure activities. And even if you are coping with a mental illness, you need to remember that every disease has a cure. You just need to be patient and follow what is being suggested by the doctor.
