Rules to follow after getting the COVID-19 vaccine

In India, both the authorized vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin are administered in two doses. The government suggests a 6-8 week time gap between doses of Covishield and a 28 time gap for Covaxin. Once you receive both the doses, you are ‘fully vaccinated’.
Contrary to what many people believe, the vaccination does not make you completely immune to COVID-19. It is imperative that all individuals who are vaccinated continue to take precautions to reduce the spread of the virus. The vaccines offer a protective layer against the virus but it is possible for you to get infected. If you do contract COVID-19 after getting the jab, the vaccine will help to mitigate the symptoms you experience and reduce severity of the illness.
In addition your body may develop immunity against the virus but you could still be a carrier and spread it to people who are yet to get vaccinated. It is important to continue wearing a well-fitted mask every time you step out. Maintain 6 feet distance in crowded areas and practice regular hand washing or sanitizing.
A large section of our population is still unprotected against the virus. While you may be vaccinated, there is no way of knowing if people around you are vaccinated or not. It is imperative to follow COVID-19 appropriate behaviour in order to control the spread of the virus. People you visit or interact with on a regular basis may still be susceptible to the virus. Therefore, whenever you plan on visiting your loved ones, do not forget that mask. Remember to maintain distance from and not touch people who are at an increased risk of contracting severe illness from COVID-19.
Given that we’re undergoing the second wave of the deadly virus and many of us are struggling to keep ourselves safe, the COVID vaccines are the need for the hour. While you may feel you are young and healthy and don’t need to get vaccinated, mass vaccination is the only light at the end of the tunnel. Get the jab, as soon as your turn comes and help stop the spread of COVID-19.
